It was 44 years ago that Gareth ‘Gus’ Davies joined 1004 (Pontypridd) Squadron as a young cadet.

Now more than four decades later the retired policeman and married father-of-two is delighted to return as Officer Commanding (OC).

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at 1004 Squadron as a cadet and I am extremely excited to be returning there as the Officer Commanding,” said Flying Officer Davies.

During his cadet career, Flying Officer Davies represented the Wing and Region in several sports and achieved a Corps blue for rugby. He passed his Basic Gliding Training in 1979 and joined the gliding school at 634 Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) as a staff cadet in 1980. He qualified to fly air experience flights for cadets while still a cadet himself.

Following cadets, he joined Ynysybwl Squadron as a Civilian Instructor and was commissioned in 1986. He moved to 1184 (Mountain Ash) Squadron as OC, where he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant. Other posts included Technical Officer at 634 VGS and OC at 2167 (Tredegar) Squadron before retiring due to work commitments in 2000.

Eight years later Fg Officer Davies joined 415 (Merthyr Tydfil) Squadron as a Civilian Instructor before being re-commissioned this year.
