Earlier today, visitors to Cardiff Bay were treated to excellent entertainment from the Military Festival of Music.
The annual outdoor event, which features some of the military’s finest bands, culminated at the Oval Basin opposite the Wales Millennium Centre.
The performing bands were:
- The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh
- The Royal Marines Band Service
- The Bugles, Pipes and Drums of The Royal Irish Regiment
- The Band of the Prince of Wales’ Division
- The Band of the Adjutant General’s Corps
- The Band and Bugles of The Rifles
- The Pembrokeshire Youth Services Band
“I was delighted to see reservists amongst the performers at today’s Military Festival of Music. Our reservists bring with them a wide range of skills, abilities and experiences that make them a force multiplier,” said Colonel Nick Beard TD DL, Chief Executive of the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Wales.
“They were of the highest standard and demonstrated why reservists are vital and valued members of the Defence family. We are very proud to provide support to more than 2,200 reservists in Wales, who come from all walks of life, and enable their contribution to the country.”
The music began at 11:15am and continued throughout the day as numerous military bands were set up throughout the Volvo Ocean Race Village.
The events ended with a Beating Retreat and Sunset Ceremony by massed bands in the Roald Dahl Plass. The final performance was the 1812 Overture, which involved the 105mm light guns of 104 Regiment Royal Artillery.
Military music has a vast history and it continues to play an important role. Bands often perform at key local, national, international and Defence events and ceremonies. The consistently impressive musical performances are effective in crossing all language and culture barriers.
Earlier in the day, 104 Regiment Royal Artillery held a gun salute to mark the 65th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation.
Over 50 cadets also attended a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event at the Volvo Ocean Race Village.
